Wendl<\/a><\/p>&#13;\r\n<p><!--\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n&#13;\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The White Desert<\/h2>&#13;\r\n&#13;\r\n<p>The White Desert is the most popular and interesting area in the Western Desert. It has been a national park since 2002 and covers an area of approximately three thousand square kilometers.<\/p>&#13;\r\n&#13;\r\n<p>The White Desert is located in the Egyptian part of the Libyan Desert, approximately 30 kilometers northeast of the Farafra Oasis and 130 kilometers southwest of the Bahariya Oasis, as well as 420 km southwest of Cairo. Both oases were already inhabited around 8000 BC. During the Pharaonic era, they served as military \"outposts against marauding Libyan tribes\" as well as \"places of exile and penal camps.\" The core area of the White Desert covers approximately 12 km by 12 km and is known for its limestone formations, which make it a large natural sculpture park. Distinct from this is the Western White Desert (el-sahara el-beida gharbiya), which impresses less with individual sculptures than with larger formations.<br\/>On the road between Farafra and Bahariya, you can see the first bizarre rock formation in the White Desert. Some rocks look like animals, mushrooms, and some rocks have completely strange shapes.<\/p>&#13;\r\n&#13;\r\n<p>As a proverb says, <strong>\"Nature is the art of God.\"<\/strong> The White Desert is clear proof of God's ability to shape His universe. Perhaps that is why the \"Finger of God\" is located in the White Desert. The Finger of God, or \"Al Qubar,\" the chisel, is a 20-meter-high rock formation that can also be seen from the paved road. Locals like to call it the Finger of God, as it looks like a giant finger protruding from the sand.<br\/>The limestone monoliths are fossilized and calcified plankton from the end of the Cretaceous period, 80 million years ago, when the current Mediterranean Sea still covered the desert. These formations were later eroded by wind, weather, and extreme temperature differences, thus acquiring their individual shapes.<\/p>&#13;\r\n&#13;\r\n<p>Original or fossilized shells, snails, ammonites, corals, animal bones, and petrified branches can be found in the White Desert. Three well-known springs, surrounded by palm trees and other vegetation, provide water for the native fauna (fennec foxes, gazelles, small rodents) and travelers. Attractions include rock formations such as the Double Gate (el-Babein) or el-Aqqabat, a supposedly 2000-year-old acacia tree (el-Santa), Crystal Mountain, and the Djara Cave.
